Enhancing Safety and Recovery at Foss Park Hospital, York

Opened in April 2020, Foss Park Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility operated by Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital has two single-sex adult wards and two wards for older patients with dementia and severe mental health issues.
Designed in partnership with patients and carers, the facility prioritises safety and recovery.

Ironmongery partner Foris Solutions selected Safehinge Primera’s mechanical 5-Way SOS locksets for the build, installing 350 units across the hospital.
These anti-ligature locksets offer reliable override options. This ensures staff can always access areas during emergencies, helping create a safer environment for both patients and staff.

The Challenge

Foss Park Hospital aimed to create an environment that balances safety with recovery-focused design. Key challenges included:

Reliable Emergency Access: Wards needed a robust locking system to allow staff to enter quickly, even in emergencies.
Addressing High-Risk Areas: The facility needed locksets made for mental health settings. These locksets should have anti-ligature features to keep vulnerable patients safe.
Durability Under Stress: Products had to withstand daily use in high-demand settings while remaining functional during extreme situations.
Supporting Recovery: The Trust aimed to foster a therapeutic, non-institutional atmosphere throughout the hospital.

The Solution

Safehinge Primera worked with Foris Solutions and P+HS Architects to provide 350 units of the 5-Way SOS lockset, the most complete emergency override locking system for mental health settings.

Anti-Ligature Mechanical 5-Way SOS Lockset

The designers created the 5-Way SOS lockset to address every potential barricade scenario, ensuring staff can gain access with unmatched emergency override functionality.

Quick Access: The staff key dominates the internal lock, resolving most barricades in under five seconds.
Five Override Methods: Four extra methods, including the emergency T-bar, provide reliable access to tough barricades.
Anti-Barricade Capability: Designed to resolve barricades swiftly, ensuring patient and staff safety in critical situations.
Emergency T-Bar Advantage: It offers better grip and leverage. This helps staff pull open anti-barricade doors from the corridor, even under high pressure.
Anti-Ligature Design: Eliminates ligature risks, making it safe for high-risk mental health settings.

Impact

The installation of the 5-Way SOS locksets made Foss Park Hospital safer for staff and patients. These locksets have advanced emergency override features that improve response times in emergencies.

Key Results:

Enhanced Safety and Recovery: Reliable emergency access reduces risks while fostering a therapeutic, supportive environment.
Improved Staff Confidence: Multi-method overrides ensure staff can respond effectively, even in high-pressure situations.
Durable Design: Locksets maintain their performance over time, withstanding the daily demands of mental health facilities.
Fostering Recovery: Anti-ligature features and intuitive design support a therapeutic, recovery-focused environment.
