LIGATURE-RESISTANT SWING DOOR FOR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH BATHROOMS

We've worked with design experts and clinicians across North America to develop a safe ligature-resistant door. It's a patient bathroom door solution that can help make mental health hospital rooms safe while preserving the privacy and dignity of patients facing the journey toward recovery.

Using load release technology, our ligature-resistant breakaway door releases under a maximum weight of 11lbs (the Office of Mental Health New York (OMH-NY) safe limit).

It's the only bathroom door to be approved and classed as a safe door featured in all three major US design guides for behavioral health:

Our ligature-resistant door for bathrooms and showers has no known ligature points preventing suicide attempts. It's a fully removable door, meaning there can be no door barricades. With over 5,000 doors now supplied without incident, our restroom doors are the safest option for any behavioral health unit.

MAXIMUM RELEASE WEIGHT OF 11LBS

The load release means that each door leaf simply detaches from the pivots if a weight of under 11lbs is applied in any direction - making it the only door to meet the OMH-NY safe limit.

DESIGNED WITH DIGNITY IN MIND

The leaves of our swing door provide a partial visual screen, enabling clinical staff to perform a quick head and feet check without infringing on patients' privacy or dignity.

MINIMIZE WEAPONIZATION

The soft foam leaves and ultra-lightweight nibs of our ensuite doors significantly minimize the risk of weaponization. At the same time, the magnets are secured inside frame-mounted pivots and inaccessible for tampering or ingestion.

Higher weight option

For patient groups where a higher maximum release weight would be more suitable, a 20lbs option is also available.

This design uses larger swing door hinges with stronger magnets.

Magnets are secured away inside frame-mounted pivots and are therefore inaccessible for tampering or ingestion.

Therapeutic environment

We're all greatly affected by our surroundings. They can profoundly impact our moods, thoughts, and feelings.

This is heightened in a behavioral health inpatient setting because people are going through a vulnerable time, and every detail of the built environment can have an impact.

That's why our bathroom door leaves are designed in various colors and prints - so that the right design can be chosen to complement the environment aiding patient recovery.

Common questions

Is it fire-tested?  Yes. It's achieved a Class A rating to ASTM E84 for flame spread and smoke (NFPA101).

Is it water resistant?  Yes. The outer PVC material is splash-resistant, and the doors' edges are bonded together to protect the internal foam - the perfect solution for a bathroom doorway.

Does it pass infection control?  Yes. It scored highly, given the PVC leaves can be easily wiped clean, and there are no stitched edges which can be a significant infection risk.

Did you know?

Did you know?

Shower curtains are regularly replaced in behavioral health hospitals due to hygiene controls and ease of damage. Due to the constant exposure to moisture and heavy use, shower curtains can harbor harmful bacteria and mold, which can pose a threat to the health of patients and staff members.

In addition to the hygiene concerns, shower curtains in behavioral health hospitals can be easily damaged due to their usage and exposure to harsh cleaning chemicals as well as patient damage. The constant need for replacement can put additional stress on the hospital’s finances and operations.

The 5-year robustness guarantee of our Shower Screen ensures the highest levels of safety and long-term value for money, making it an excellent substitute for shower curtains.
