Blairdardie Primary School
Funded by Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government, this £12.1 million state-of-the-art primary school was built to replace an existing school building. The doors were opened in March 2019, welcoming up to 462 pupils. Situated on the city’s Great Western Road, the school provides an inspiring, flexible learning environment for Primary 1-7 children. Architects Holmes Miller specified our integral finger guard throughout, blending seamlessly with their contemporary design.

The Challenge
Blairdardie Primary School is fresh and modern and has been thoughtfully designed to include various communal and break-out spaces alongside a media library, health and wellbeing room and retreat space.
The school is split into a teaching area and shared community space, with a 4-court gymnasium at the heart of the building. Available to the surrounding community, it provides an adaptable space that adds value to the school. A multi-purpose, high-traffic environment, Blairdardie has been designed to a high quality, contemporary finish and built to last. Hence they needed finger guards that would last the lifetime of the well-built doors, to keep all users safe – schoolchildren and members of the community.
The Solution
Safehinge Primera’s integral finger guards were chosen to fit the bill. Available in a range of RAL colour and timber finishes, they blend discreetly in each of these contemporary spaces – keeping little fingers safe without compromising on aesthetics. They last the lifetime of the door, saving this school up to £500 – £1,000 per door compared to plastic alternatives. This has resulted in an adaptable learning space with added value.
Commenting on the new school, local councillor Paul Carey said, “It provides a stimulating, healthy and wonderful atmosphere for young people to learn in and play.”
