Russell Clinic, Wonford House
Installation of safe doorsets, locksets and handles aiding mental health rehabilitation in a residential setting.
Alongside The Junipers PICU and Jasmine Lodge MBU, Russell Clinic makes up one of the varying wards on the Wonford House site in Exeter. Recently undergoing a major refurbishment, the 16-bed facility provides specialist support and rehabilitation for people in a more residential setting.

The Challenge
As the threshold between public and private space for patients, doors are a significant and symbolic feature for both patients and staff. Devon Partnership needed to ensure the bedroom doors were safe without compromising the more residential feel of Russell Clinic.
The Clinic needed to detect and avoid ligature attempts as well as preventing barricades with anti-barricade doors, allowing staff access in a crisis. All this needed to be done in a way to support rehabilitation and recovery from mental health.
The Solution
We worked closely with The Devon Partnership to achieve rehabilitation in their residential setting:
- Anti-barricade doorsets are finished in bright, welcoming colours with soft timber beading – helping to create a less clinical, more homely feel
- In case of an emergency situation, the collapsible anti-barricade stop provides staff with access into the bedroom in just 2 seconds using the Lifeline key (the same key used to operate the vision panel.
- If for any reason the locksets are tampered with in an effort to prevent staff gaining access, the 5-way SOS lockset is designed to override the internal lock using an emergency toolkit stored in the nearest staff base.
Lifesaving technology
In the patient bedroom area, the anti-barricade doors are also fitted with our full-door ligature alarm which detects ligature attempts across the entire door.
- With full-door ligature detection, the door acts as a weighing scale – raising an alarm when a vertical load of over 5kg is detected
- This supports clinical staff in their care by helping to fill in blind spots between observations.
- Apart from the small maintenance panel on the side of the door, the alarm can’t be seen from within the bedroom
- This reduces the potentially harmful impact that noticeable ligature prevention products can have on patients’ self worth
