Safety and Sustainability at Bellenden Primary School

Robust Safety Solutions for a Growing School Population

Bellenden Primary School, located in Peckham Rye, London, is part of the London Borough of Southwark’s ambitious school-building programme. Cottrell & Vermeulen designed this new-built school to accommodate a growing pupil population while incorporating sustainable design elements. Safehinge Primera’s integral finger guards (Alumax) were chosen to provide finger protection and long-lasting safety in the school’s high-traffic environments.

The Challenge

The London Borough of Southwark, committed to reducing long-term maintenance costs and ensuring the safety of its expanding school population, faced several challenges during the design of Bellenden Primary School:

Durability for High-Traffic Environments: The school required robust finger guards capable of withstanding daily use while maintaining performance over time.

Trapped Fingers Prevention: As the student body increased, there was a heightened need for finger trap prevention around doors.

Aesthetic Integration: The school’s vibrant modern design, featuring large colourful panels, required door finger guards that would blend into the environment without compromising safety.

Sustainability and Cost Efficiency: The borough sought low-maintenance solutions that would reduce long-term maintenance costs, helping to maintain sustainability in the long run.

The Solution

Our finger guards for doors offered the ideal solution to these challenges. Designed for high-demand environments like schools, these door safety solutions ensured the safety of students and staff while seamlessly fitting into the school’s overall design.

Integral Finger Guards (Alumax)

The key benefits of Safehinge Primera’s integral finger guards include:

Exceptional Durability: Made from high-quality materials, these finger protectors are built to endure daily wear and tear in high-traffic areas, ensuring they last the lifetime of the door.

Sustainability: Designed to offer long-term performance, these finger guards reduce the need for replacements, offering long-term savings compared to plastic alternatives, with a savings of £500-£1,000 per door.

Aesthetic Integration: The sleek, discreet design allows the door finger guards to seamlessly integrate with the school’s modern design, complementing its vibrant, welcoming feel.

Trapped Fingers Prevention: These finger guards for schools effectively prevent the risk of trapped fingers by maintaining a consistent 2mm gap between the door and frame, enhancing safety in high-traffic areas.

Cost Efficiency: Shoal’s door safety solutions are low-maintenance solutions that help schools save on replacement costs over time while ensuring the safety and durability of the door hardware.

The Impact

Many existing mental health inpatient environments have either a full door or no door at all to the en-suite.  This either presents a huge unobserved ligature risk or deprives patients of privacy and dignity in their own bedroom.

The Junipers was built specifically to improve the level of care given to those who needed it most in the area, so it was vital the bedrooms were designed with patients in mind.  All bedrooms are therefore fitted with our en-suite doors and full-door ligature alarm.
