Little fingers. Lifelong consequences.
A door closes. A child’s fingers are caught. In seconds, an ordinary school day can become something far more serious.
Every year in the UK, an estimated 300,000 children trap and seriously injure their fingers in doors, with 1,500 requiring surgery and 600 resulting in amputation.
Behind every number is a child experiencing pain and distress, a family facing an unexpected injury and a school community left asking whether it could have been prevented.
For architects, specifiers and estates teams, the challenge goes beyond preventing injuries today. With tightening budgets, growing maintenance demands and responsibility for safeguarding, every specification needs to deliver lasting protection and long term value.
Doors are opened and closed countless times throughout the school day. In busy corridors, classrooms and shared spaces, it only takes a moment for fingers to become trapped.
And while the immediate injury may heal, the consequences can be lasting.
The challenge isn’t simply choosing finger protection that works today. It’s choosing a solution that continues to protect children with a solution that lasts.
Department for Education: A requirement for a reason
Finger trapping protection is not simply an optional addition to school design. It is specifically addressed in the Department for Education’s technical requirements for relevant school building projects.
The DfE Technical Manual, January 2026, section 2.8.17, requires finger guards on doorsets used by pupils in Early Years, Key Stage 1, special schools, special colleges, alternative provision and SEN units, alongside other doors identified in the project brief.²
It also sets out how that protection should perform. Finger guards must meet Class 2 of BS 8613, with protection built into new doors and frames and retrofitted into existing doors without compromising performance.
These requirements reflect an important principle: protection should be considered as part of the doorset, not simply added as an afterthought.
For architects, specifiers and estates teams, that means looking beyond initial compliance and installation costs to consider durability, maintenance and lifetime value.
The DfE requirements exist for a reason. A good specification should not only meet today’s requirements, but provide lasting protection, fewer maintenance concerns and confidence in the decision for years to come.
Safehinge Primera: Protection designed around the people who need it
At Safehinge Primera, we believe protecting children shouldn’t mean creating more maintenance work or unexpected costs for the people responsible for their safety.
Our Alumax and Alumini finger protection solutions give schools two practical ways to address finger trapping risks, whether designing new buildings or improving existing spaces.
Both are designed for lasting protection, helping reduce repeated replacements and maintenance costs, with potential savings of up to £1,000 per door over its lifetime, depending on the installation and maintenance requirements.

Alumax: Designing out the danger
Rather than covering the hinge gap, Alumax redesigns it.
Its integral finger protection system maintains a constant 2 mm gap as the door opens and closes, removing the dangerous trapping point.
Designed for new doors and major refurbishments, Alumax provides durable protection as part of the doorset itself. With no separate flexible guard to replace, it helps reduce ongoing maintenance, replacement costs and disruption.
For architects, that means specifying safety into the design from the outset, with confidence in its lasting performance. For estates teams, it means fewer maintenance demands and protection designed to last as long as the door.

Alumini: Bringing dependable protection to existing doors
Replacing every door is not always practical, particularly when schools are balancing safety improvements against limited budgets and growing maintenance pressures.
Alumini offers a robust retrofit solution for existing doors. Its patented finger ejection mechanism helps move fingers away from the hinge gap as the door closes, while allowing doors to open up to 180 degrees.
Built with a durable aluminium body, Alumini is designed to withstand the demands of busy educational environments, and it can last up to seven times longer than conventional plastic finger guards.
That means fewer replacements, reduced maintenance demands and better lifetime value, helping schools make budgets go further without compromising on protection.
Real schools, real reassurance: Protection that lasts
At Worcesters Primary School in Enfield, Alumax was initially specified for a new extension. Following the installation, the school went on to use Alumini guards across its existing building, replacing plastic guards that had become a maintenance concern.
The project demonstrates how schools can combine integral protection in new buildings with durable retrofit solutions in existing spaces, reducing reliance on guards that require frequent maintenance or replacement.
At Ashgate and Crossacres Primary Schools in Manchester, Alumax and Alumini were used across new and refurbished areas, helping the project team address finger trapping risks while responding to the practical demands of the buildings.
These examples show what thoughtful specification can achieve: lasting safety, fewer maintenance concerns and better value over the lifetime of the building.
For architects and specifiers, it means confidence in recommending solutions built to last. For estates teams, fewer unexpected costs, less time spent on maintenance and greater reassurance that budgets have been well spent. And for teachers and parents, confidence that children’s safety has been considered in the everyday details.
Because every child deserves the freedom to learn, play and explore without an avoidable injury changing their day, or their future.
Together, we design for good.
Protect little fingers. Reduce lifetime costs.
