SEVENACRES WARD

Offering in-patient mental healthcare and support, Isle of Wight Foundation Trust upgraded their existing Sevenacres Ward in 2017, with the project led by Studio Four Architects.

Home to service users at different stages of their recovery pathway, the architects knew it was vital that the environment should also reflect this.  That’s why the unit offers increased service user independence and dignity for those further along the recovery process – whilst also catering for those in more vulnerable stages who require monitoring on a more regular basis.

Aiding recovery and offering service user independence

Hosting a range of therapeutic activities aimed at maximising service user independence, the Trust required doorsets and components that would offer superior safety and enhance the recovery process. Our anti-barricade doorsets and electronic locksets helped achieve this.

  • The anti-barricade doorsets have minimal visible fixings, and the anti-barricade stop is super discreet, so it looks homely –yet ensures staff can always get in
  • The layout of the building and patient accommodation is designed to maximise the dignity of service users.  They complimented this by installing our electronic lockset, Passport, which enables the Trust to promote service user independence by allowing them to unlock their own door – something the CQC is increasingly highlighting in inspections
  • Passport is the only access control lockset with complete staff override built-in – ensuring staff can always gain access in an emergency.

Seamlessly balancing safety with recovery

With a separate Seagrove Ward dedicated to helping service users at the beginning of their in-patient treatment pathway, the Trust needed seclusion room doorsets to create a more secure environment.

Having been so satisfied with our anti-barricade doors and electronic locksets, the Trust are in the process of installing our seclusion room doorsets in this ward.

  • Built to withstand extreme abuse, they’re robust and safe, withstanding high levels of aggression for extended periods of time
  • With no protruding items on the inside of the door and the architrave recessed into the door frame to reduce the risk of staff danger, this limits the likelihood of vulnerable service users self-harming
  • The timber effect finish helps to create a calming environment and aid in de-escalation
