SUREGRIP LIGATURE-SAFE HANDLE

Following our philosophy that good design starts with conversation and observation, we spoke to over 40 of you to gather your feedback on existing ligature-safe handles for mental health.

From clinical staff and architects, to experts by experience and estates teams, you told us that you'd like to see a handle that:

  • is ligature-safe
  • has better grip
  • looks less institutional
  • doesn't compromise on the robustness and durability of our existing handles

So, based on your feedback, we designed Suregrip.

TWICE THE GRIP

Clinical staff and experts by experience told us they wanted a handle that offered better grip than existing pull handles, ensuring comfort and practicality on a day-to-day basis. Suregrip's asymmetric design provides double the grip.

NON-INSTITUTIONAL

Existing handles in Mental Health have a large metal back-plate for durability reasons; however, with some clever engineering, we've managed to retain the robustness of existing handles but with an invisible back-plate.

SUITABLE FOR ALL DOORS

The hand we use to operate a door depends on which way the door swings. For convenience, Suregrip has been designed to rotate 180º to ensure it can be fitted on any door.

Here's what one of our customers had to say:

“We’re primarily an acute hospital trust in Bristol. However, we’re seeing a significant increase in patients with co-morbid mental health disorders—for example, eating disorders or substance misuse. Therefore, our design strategy is being reviewed with this risk profile in mind.

“To meet the needs of these patients, we decided to introduce the Suregrip handle to our hospital, which is a huge step forward in fixed ligature safety balanced by its non-institutional design.

“It’s also a big thumbs up from our resident carpenter and infection, prevention and control colleagues, as it has no awkward corners and is easy to sanitise. I particularly value the improvement for patients with limited grip strength, which has sometimes been tricky with other pinch grips or rounded handles.

“I can see this product being recommended for some projects on the horizon within our trust.”

-Tim Johnston, Operational Health & Safety Manager, North Bristol NHS Trust

YOU SPOKE; WE LISTENED

Lead Design Engineer Max travelled around the UK to gain feedback that would inform the design of Suregrip.

He spent months on the road visiting experts by lived experience, clinical staff, architects, estates and capital teams and listening to the challenges of existing handles on the market.
