MILDMAY OAKS, PRIORY GROUP

Mildmay Oaks offers in-patient rehabilitation services for men and women with learning disabilities and autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs). The 39-bed unit has both low-secure and high-secure facilities.

Operated by The Priory Group, the unit aims to support patients with community-based activities so they can progress through their care pathway towards a community-based placement.  Creating a domestic-looking environment was key to this – and the client and designers chose our doorsets throughout.

Creating a bright, welcoming space

A stunning feature of this unit is the large atrium, off which many of the bedrooms are located. This creates a central focal and meeting point in the unit where service users can socialise. It also uses natural sunlight as a design feature – helping create a welcoming, uplifting recovery environment.

Our Symphony doors were chosen to help contribute towards an aspirational aesthetic.

  • The doors were finished with oak veneer, providing a quality finish to the scheme
  • The anti-barricade stop – providing reliable emergency access in just 2 seconds – is integral to the frame and is practically invisible
  • Doors use our concealed closer, which are discreet, anti-ligature and tamper-resistant – as well as eliminating costly floor-excavations for floor springs
  • 5-way SOS locksets were used on all bedroom doors, ensuring staff can always gain access in an emergency to these higher risk rooms

Providing full training

On many doorset projects, we manage the specification and installation training to ensure the project is on-time and at our high-quality standard. This included onsite training with members of the clinical and estate teams before the unit was reopened.

The staff training included:

  • Overcoming simple barricades – the staff key overrides the internal turn-pull on the 5-way SOS lockset, ending simple barricades quickly
  • Overcoming determined barricades – using the emergency toolkit, where staff can unlock the door even if the keyway is blocked
  • Activating, using and resetting the integrated anti-barricade stop – providing reliable emergency access in 2 seconds, with staff safely standing to the side of the door
